So many of our friends, family, and neighbors of Altadena were forced to flee in the face of the devastating Eaton Wildfire, and still we face another threat -- real estate speculators and developers. Since the fires broke out, nearly HALF of all property sales have gone to anonymous investors and LLCs according to this new report by Strategic Actions for a Just Economy. If these predatory real estate practices continue undeterred, Altadena will lose its most precious resource -- it's residents. There is no community without us and the rebuild must provide a path for ALL displaced Altadeneans to come home.
SIGN BY JULY 1st!
We have been working with Assemblymember Tina McKinnor to ban unsolicited offers in the burn area until 2027 and to create a 4-month window that would allow homeowners to back out of escrow entered under pressure. This bill now moves through the Senate before it goes to the Governor. We need your voice!
SIGN BY JULY 15th!
SB 436 (Wahab) – cosponsored by Public Advocates, the Western Center on Law and Poverty, and the Los Angeles Right to Counsel Coalition – extends the “pay or quit” period from 3 business days to 14 business days. By giving tenants a fair amount of time to pay the rent they owe, SB 436 stops unnecessary evictions while ensuring that landlords get paid and tenants get to stay in their homes.
KEEP SENDING EMAILS UNTIL JULY 15!!
Email the governor:
Senator Sasha Renee Perez and Assemblymember John Harabedian are asking State leadership and the Governor for their support in creating a fund that will help trusted local-nonprofits compete against speculators and build affordable, culturally relevant housing for Altadenans to return to.
We are a group of residents and allies supported by the Los Angeles Community Land Trust Coalition. We believe that residents should be at the center of the decision-making and that we have the tools and wisdom to rebuild our community without displacing our neighbors.
